About Us NRI Certificate

NRI Certificate will be provided only to Indian Passport holders. For non-Indian passport holders, having OCI card, NRI certificate will be issued only for admission to their family members in India at the Indian University under NRI Quota. Applicants must provide a proof that a certificate is required for admission in Indian University under NRI quota.

Important Update: With the opening of CGI Seattle, CGI San Francisco now serves the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Guam. Residents of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming should submit their applications to CGI Seattle.

How to apply:

Applying In Person:

All miscellaneous-attestation services are now accessible on a walk-in basis, without the need for an appointment, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on regular working days.

Fee: A non-refundable fee of $ 25 (twenty five) + $2 Indian Community Welfare Fee (ICWF) per application.

Fees should be paid through Money order or Cashiers’ cheque drawn in favor of the ‘Consulate General of India, San Francisco’NO BLANK CHECK/MONEY ORDER WILL BE ACCEPTED BY THE CONSULATE. Cash, Personal Cheques, Credit Cards, Debit Cards or other banking instruments are not accepted.

Supporting documents and processing instructions:

Applying in-person: Carry originals of all the supporting documents to be presented to the Consular Officer (photocopies of which are to be attached with the application).
Applying by Mail: Submit notarized copies of all the supporting documents. No originals to be submitted by post.

  1. Miscellaneous Services Form– Submit a duly filled and signed Miscellaneous Application form along with the following supporting documents.
  2. Copy of Passport (first and last page) [submit a notarized copy if sent by mail]
  3. Proof of your US Visa Status [any one of the following; submit a notarized copy if sent by mail; Not applicable for US citizens]
  • Photocopy of the page containing visa on passport (H1B, H4 etc.) and the copy of I-94
  • Clear Photocopy of Green Card
  • Employment Authorization Document (Work Permit)
  • I-797, I-140 or I-20 (If approval copy of these notices is pending, attach a handwritten note detailing the efforts being taken to regularize status)
  1. Proof of current US residence address [any one of the following; submit a notarized copy if sent by mail]:
  • U.S Driving license
  • PG&E, Water or landline telephone bill displaying applicant’s address
  • House Lease Agreement
  • State Identification Card
    Note: Bank/credit card/mobile phone statements are not accepted as residence proof
  1. On the basis of the Indian passport held, applicants may submit a list of their entry/exit into/from India to confirm length of total stay in foreign country during a particular financial year (March to April). In case of any doubt, the case will be referred to the concerned agencies in India for clarification, which might delay issuance of NRI certificate. (Entry/Exit List Link)
  2. Applicants with Indian passportmay also submit a NOTARIZED affidavit/declaration that they have stayed abroad for more than 182 days during a particular financial year (March to April).
  3. OCI card holders may also submit copy of their OCI card and must provide a proof that a certificate is required for admission in Indian University under NRI quota.
  4. If applying by mail - Please enclose a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope (USPS 'Express Mail' or UPS etc.,) for dispatching the processed documents.
  5. Processing time:
    o   For in-person appointment - It's a same day service. Delivery of Documents:  04.00 pm to 04.45 pm (same day)
    o   For postal mail - documents are processed within a week of being received at the consulate.
  6. In case the Consulate receives applications with incomplete documentation/fee, the same would be sent back unprocessed in the return envelope sent by the applicant.
