Who will give appointment for obtaining the service?

What are the categories of documents attested?

Attestation of documents such as PAN form, bank statement, salary statement, copy of Indian passport, copy of a document issued by us authorities (us passport, driving license, etc.)

What documents are not attested by the Consulate?

The Consulate does not attest any document issued by authorities in India. If any document issued by authorities in India (such as birth and death certificates, affidavits, diplomas, marriage certificate and educational certificates issued by authorities in India ) are required to be presented to authorities in USA, these should be apostilled in India. Is it mandatory to apostil documents for attestation at the Consulate?

There is no need to apostille the documents to be attested for persons holding Indian Passports/OCI/PIO cardsHowever the documents must be duly notarized.

What are the requirements to be fulfilled if one is applying in person at the Consulate?

Carry originals of all the supporting documents to be presented to the Consular Officer (photocopies of which are to be attached with the application).  In case you are not able to present the original documents at the counter bring notarized copy of documents being attached to the application.  Ensure that notarized copy is legible, otherwise Consulate may ask to see the original. However, the passport and the document (which is to be attested) should be presented in original.

Fee :  A non-refundable fee of $10 (ten) + $2 Indian Community Welfare Fee (ICWF) w.e.f. Oct. 01, 2012 per attestation + $10 (ten) per photograph (if photograph to be also attested).  If you want to receive the attested documents back through mail, send a trackable pre-paid return mailing envelope (USPS 'Express Mail', UPS, etc.) 
Note: For Copy of Indian Passport Attestation a non-refundable fee of $10 (Ten) + $2 Indian Community Welfare Fee (ICWF).

Fees should be paid through Money order or Cashiers’ cheque drawn in favor of the ‘Consulate General of India, San Francisco’. Cash, Personal cheques, credit cards, Debit Cards or other banking instruments are not accepted.

What are the requirements to be fulfilled if one is applying by postal mail or through courier service?

Photocopy of all supporting documents should be notarized and attached to the application. Do not send any original documents except the PASSPORT and the document to be attested.

Fee :  A non-refundable fee of $10 (ten) + $2 Indian Community Welfare Fee (ICWF) w.e.f. Oct. 01, 2012 per attestation + $10(ten) per photograph (if photograph to be also attested).  If you want to receive the attested documents back through mail, send a trackable pre-paid return mailing envelope (USPS 'Express Mail' or UPS etc.). All applications should be addressed to MISCELLANEOUS CELL, CONSULATE GENERAL OF INDIA, 540 ARGUELLO BOULEVARD, SAN FRANCISCO CA 94118.
